Tens of thousands of Americans possess a federal license to either sell guns (Type 01) or manufacture guns (Type 07) issued by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Yet, surprisingly few of these license holders actually operate storefront gun stores or actual factories that manufacture firearms. Instead, they operate out of their homes, offices, or other non-traditional locations—often unbeknownst to their neighbors or other community members and potentially in violation of state or local business, licensing, zoning, or other laws or regulations.
With the tool below, you can plug in your own address and see if there are federally licensed gun dealers or manufacturers near you. Or you can search by zip code or state. When you conduct a search you can click on the corresponding location pin for more information on that license holder. A list of relevant license holder addresses organized alphabetically by city should also appear below the map.
Once you have selected a location, click on “View on Google Maps” to see a Google street view photo of the license holder’s “place of business.” Please be aware that Google’s street view is not always accurate and may require additional research.
