This August, gunmaker Auto-Ordnance introduced the TAO50-18, a shorter-barreled version of its TAO50 50 caliber sniper rifle. Fifty caliber anti-armor sniper rifles are specifically designed to engage and destroy materiel targets on the battlefield at long range. Designed specifically for warfighting, these anti-armor rifles feature a range and striking power that is far beyond that of any hunting rifle or the standard battle rifles our infantry carry. (On a sidenote, Auto-Ordnance is a division of Kahr Firearms Group, which is headed by Justin Moon, a son of Unification Church founder Sun Myung Moon.)
Although the most powerful rifle available without coming under the tighter restrictions of the federal National Firearms Act of 1934 (NFA), 50 caliber sniper rifles can be purchased under federal law as easily as a standard hunting rifle. These weapons can penetrate armor-plating, down jetliners on take-off and landing, shoot helicopters out of the sky, compromise industrial and nuclear facilities, and threaten national security. They’ve been used by terrorists around the world, including Osama bin Laden’s Al Qaeda. More recently, they’ve become a weapon of choice of Mexican cartels against law enforcement. They have also been used in domestic crimes in the U.S. Or as one reviewer characterized the rounds fired by the full-size TAO50: “Not a surgical cartridge, it was designed to defeat heavy armor and destroy machinery….”
Fifty caliber sniper rifles are relatively large and unwieldly compared to standard rifles. Auto-Ordnance’s “compact” 50 caliber sniper rifle reduces barrel length by 11 inches: from 29 inches to 18 inches. Overall length is reduced by 17.5 inches; from 61 inches to 43.5 inches. The gun uses the same size ammunition as its larger forebearer. As Gun Digest proclaimed, “For those who need serious firepower in a more compact package, the 18-inch model is now available.”
In an August 2026 press release, Auto-Ordnance boasted of the gun’s “devastating .50 BMG caliber,” how the new design “optimizes maneuverability and operational portability,” and promised that the gun has “unparalleled anti-materiel precision in a significantly more compact, fast-handling footprint.”
On its website, Auto-Ordnance touts the downsized rifle as, “Designed to deliver massive firepower in a compact footprint, this hard-hitting platform slashes length and weight to maximize portability and maneuverability without sacrificing the extreme long-range accuracy of the original model.”
The Violence Policy Center has issued a range of studies looking at the terror threat posed by 50 caliber anti-armor sniper rifles. A smaller, more concealable version of an easily accessed military weapon that is a proven favorite of terrorists can only make a truly bad situation worse. Unfortunately, but not unsurprisingly, the TAO50-18 is only the most recent, and extreme, example of the gun industry’s ongoing, driving fixation to offer the greatest firepower possible in the smallest platform available – regardless of the risk to public safety or, in this case, national security.
In its review noting the smaller (or as Auto-Ordnance works to beat into its potential customers’ heads: compact! compact! compact!) size of the TAO50-18, Pew Pew Tactical exclaimed, “That’s practically CQB [Close Quarters Battle] territory.” Beneath the statement was an “I’m kidding” GIF featuring Homelander from the explosively violent television show The Boys.
Yeah, well.
Just “kidding” — for now.
